Did you, per chance, miss out the first parts of the topic? The one that explains about adding the appropriate line to cull.ipl to actually see the screen? And the part about writing some actual data to see on the screen? They're both pretty important.

Assuming it's not crashing any more from not using version 2...

I can't quite remember, probably not. You'd probably have to figure out how to dynamically create/alter cull zones and do a few other tricks to get it to work smoothly.
